Are Ink Cartridges for the Epson R1900 Continuing to Be Manufactured

Should I Replace my Epson Stylus Photo R1900 Printer

Hi. I have owned the R1900 for many years and am generally very pleased with the prints it produces. However, after nearly depleting my supply of ink cartridges which I purchased early in 2016, I noticed that prices for replacement cartridges had increased dramatically. I would regularly pay $14.27 Cdn. per cartridge after taking advantage of one of their regular 15% discount promotions. I had not seen any promotional ink offers from Epson since August of 2016. They are now charging $19.69 per cartridge, an increase of 38% over their discounted prices.

Since this printer is quite old, would it be worth my while to look into newer printers with (perhaps) lower supply costs but equal quality? Or am I wasting my time. I feel that paying approximately $140.00 to refill my printer is somewhat excessive.

I will offer my opinion although it may or may not be beneficial for you.  Your comments indicate the current printer produces good printed photos.  Your main emphasis relates to increased ink cartridge costs for your printer.

My opinion is that if you check ink pricing for various other printers that ink costs (like almost everything) has increased to the point of being an issue for consumers.  If you should buy another printer Brand (or Model) my opinion is that you will be experiencing higher ink costs (than in previous years) which ALL seems to have increased.  I definitely would NOT purchase another printer should I be confronted with your described situation.

The main difference in consumables (ink cartridges) is that printers that have larger ink capacity cartridges usually have lower cost (per ML or OZ).  Depending on your printing volumes, that could make a difference.

However, a few years ago, (around 8 years) I chose to research non OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) ink types (for me -- non Epson) to select a type (for each of my 5 Epson printers) (C80, 2200, three R800, and 3880) that is as close as possible to the Epson Printer Mfgr. inks.  I retired the C80 and the 2200 finally developed non repairable issues after 13 years of service.  I chose the Pigment inks sold by Inkjetcarts.  They also have VERY knowledgeable Tech Support (Ross Hardy).  The first few years, I used the empty Epson cartridges and refilled these with the non OEM ink and this has resulted in excellent results and I have observed NO difference in the non OEM inks as compared to the Epson OEM inks.

I changed over a year ago to using non Epson refillable (auto resetting type) cartridges and of course continued to use the same type inks for refilling these different type cartridges.  The only reason for changing cartridges types is for LESS time for the refilling process.

I am NOT attempting to sway you toward NON Epson inks and refilling, instead; I am discussing my solution to the continual increase in printer MFGR ink Cartridges.

I (and our Families) have many pictures that were printed since selecting the inks form Inkjetcarts and "thankfully" there is NO fading or change in colors.

Re: Should I Replace my Epson Stylus Photo R1900 Printer

Good thoughts, Vernon. I run vintage pigment printers myself (2200 and R2400) and use a combination of old OEM carts bought on eBay, remanufactured OEM carts and I have bulk ink also. If you buy inks from Ross Hardie, he will make sophisticated profiles for free (6 charts are involved). I am not selling prints and not worried about less than perfect rendition.

I like Ross's videos on YouTube and those from inkproducts.com (He sounds a lot like Ross!) Both gentleman have a lot of great tips about these printers.

Look into expired OEM carts on eBay or remanufactured OEM carts form LD Products. If profiling is important, inkjetcarts.com may be a good choice. I also like some of the other third-party sellers like http://printpayless.com/.

I use such cheaper inks in my office printers that take pigment ink.

As Vernon eluded to, one nice thing about the older carts is that they reset easily if you want to try refilling OEM carts. Joe R had a ton of great videos on how to do that.

I agree about the OEM price. $15+ for 15ml carts for long-issued printers is way too much.

Thanks for the advice.

Hi. I have been looking at options on the Inkjetcart site. I notice that they sell "Epson R1900 PrintersKit T0870 - T0879 Refillable". With this kit, would the replacement cartridges operate the same way my current OEM cartridges do? i.e. give me low ink warnings and stop printing when there is an empty cartridge? Is the process of adding inks difficult? I also noticed that for an additional $30 they sell Epson R1900 StarterKit Damper Refill System. Would the latter system, in your opinion, be the way to go? Thanks again.

Suggest you discuss directly with Ross Hardy at Inkjetcarts -- especially since I don't have the R1900 printer. I use the auto resettable cartridges for my three R800 and one R1800 and (for these printers) monitoring and reporting is basically the same as when using Epson Cartridges for these printers. I doubt there is any difference for the R1900 printer but I don't know for certain. Ross will definitely know.

I prefer to use my Ink Cartridge Re-setters with these Refillable Cartridges the same as when I filled empty Epson Cartridges. This is opposed to using the auto re-setting feature/function for these auto reset cartridges. This way I can (and usually do) refill several cartridges during one refilling session (and reset the Chip ready for use) rather than to re-fill one at a time as they get to the point (condition) of Auto resetting. Note: of course, the auto reset does NOT take care of the refilling procedure.

Refilling is VERY Quick and Easy -- I use 20 cc Syringes and fill to around 15cc as many syringes as I have different cartridges to be refilled.  This of course usually has several different ink colors to be used.

Actual Refilling is: Pull out the stopper at top of the ink cartridge, squirt ink (of proper color) to fill the cartridge -- from the syringe. Squirt the remaining (unused ink) back into the storage Ink Bottle -- NO waste. This allows fillings to use whatever volume that is needed to fill the specific ink cartridge. The Ink Cartridges are "almost clear" and allows seeing the ink and filling status.

I also noticed that for an additional $30 they sell Epson R1900 StarterKit Damper Refill System. Would the latter system, in your opinion, be the way to go? Thanks again.

I am not familiar with this -- so please discuss with Ross.

However, one of my R800 printers is equipped with a CISS system which I bought at Inkjetcarts -- at the suggestion of Ross Hardy -- for this one R800 printer -- which originally WAS rather temperamental regarding ink flow and clogging as compared to the other two R800 printers. At that time (3 years ago) there were NO refillable auto resettable cartridges available. I have been exceptionally pleased with the CISS. However, my current opinion/choice  is with the ease of refilling of the current Resettable/Refillable Cartridges -- I like using these.

I hope this is useful for you. Sorry for the length......

The best prices I have found currently are from Henry's and Vistek. The latter are selling kits at a discount. A kit would qualify for free shipping.

Correction: these people here in Vancouver are better: http://tricera.ca/search/results?q=r1900&cat=ink , but do charge for shipping even for large orders.

I've never been that smitten with the idea of refilling myself, with all the possible accidents and wastage involved, plus the untested longevity of non-OEM inks. I like to be able to give/sell a print on 100% cotton with a clear statement of its expected life if it's properly matted, backed & glazed.

Take heart, your printer is cheaper to run than my 2200!

Were you able to contact Ross Hardie today for details in your last post (to me) and discussed in our last posts.

It rained last night and most of the day today -- so I was not able to continue my outside project. So, I decided this evening to refill 22 of the R800 cartridges plus reset the chip ready for use.

I am glad I didn't have to pay close to $400. for 22 Epson R800 Ink Cartridges.

Look into ink prices of new cartridges of new printers first. In general ink prices continue to rise as fewer people print.

Or am I wasting my time. I feel that paying approximately $140.00 to refill my printer is somewhat excessive.

Extremely. Consider 3rd party ink from eBay

I'm not comfortable buying this type of product on eBay. I will most likely try  Inkjetcarts.

I have an old Epson R280 that I have been using for years and it still prints great. The original ink ran out years ago. I purchased refillable ink cartridges on eBay along with ink several years ago. It still prints just as good as new and the prints look great. The ink cartridges are very easy to refill and the ink bottles I have are easy to use without getting ink on your hands.

I have used Hardy's inks in my r 1900 for over five years with no problems.  I use the refillable carts with the electronic gizmo which goes inside the printer where the carts sit.  I have saved a bundle of money over the years.   Ignore the low ink warnings and just check the level of the ink visually occasionally.   Running a cart dry is a little tedious to correct. I usually refill when one is half empty, filling them all.  Also, All printers will eventually get clogged head nozzles.  You can usually print your way out of them with printing a full page of the affected color.  If you have to do a head cleaning, try the auto head cleaning feature first.  Cleaning consumes a good bit of ink.  Using Epson carts to do this will send you to the poor house.------ John

Re: Should I Replace my Epson Stylus Photo R1900 Printer

I also use this printer (R1900) but I replaced the cartridges with refillable cartridges (readily available from many places including eBay. Just do a search on Google) The ink ( bottles) is also readily available to refill them (both dye and pigment). I've printed photos this way and they have hung in direct sunlight for years without fading.

Re: Should I Replace my Epson Stylus Photo R1900 Printer

One silly idea - one could consider using bottled original"ink tank" ink for refills. It might sit in the middle with regards to price and print longevity. Then, it might not, the low end tank inks are not branded "Claria" or "DURAbrite". That doesn't mean that the quality is lower, of course.
